Giving Back
My Story
Giving/Gifting Back
“Each one, teach one” is more than an African Proverb for me; it is myGPS for life.
Retired after a forty-two year career teaching middle school English Language Arts, I spend most of my time giving back. Being of service to others has become my passion. With a lifetime of experiences to pull from, I am drawn to those seeking a change for better. Like moths to a flame, I find myself mentoring caregiver daughters of elderly parents, providing encouragement for seniors interested in, but somewhat hesitant, to reenter the world of dating, holding a safe space for those struggling with mental health challenges.
When asked to identify my most rewarding post-retirement, post-Covid endeavors, without hesitation, I credit a daily practice of gratitude, self-care, and bringing joy to all of my relationships.
In 2018 my ninety year old mother passed, leaving the family home to me. Grateful that she had her affairs in order thus shielding me from the horrors of probate as well as other inheritance challenges, I must confess that I was petrified knowing that I had such a huge financial responsibility.
Quite frankly, money had never been my friend and for the most part, I lived check to check. However, at the (suave? Urbane? sophisticated?) age of seventy, I knew that I needed a change. I needed to think differently about my money and I needed to behave differently with my money.
I needed a money makeover.
I needed a new relationship w/ my money if I am to thrive in the wonder years ahead,
I needed to do something different.
